With a green light from the mayor, a new law will go into effect requiring most Philadelphia businesses to accept cash as payment, pushing back on a trend in which a rising number take credit and debit cards only.
Several states and cities have taken actions that mirror Philadelphia's. New Jersey's legislature approved a law on Jan. 31 that bars retailers from prohibiting cash, while Washington, D.C., and New York have introduced similar legislation.
