Japanese $1.50 store to open fifth store in North Texas

The Hiroshima-based company has more than 2,800 stores in Japan and more than 600 in other countries including the U.S., where it so far has stores in California, Washington and Texas.. . . more

Amazon extends double-digit sales-growth streak

Amazon.com’s unbroken 20-year streak of double-digit revenue growth shows no sign of slowing this year, helped by an influx of online shoppers who are abandoning stores and new business for its cloud-computing division.


The company topped profit and revenue estimates in the first quarter and projected sales that may beat projections in the current period, reinforcing its message to investors that big spending on warehouses, movies and devices are all part of a winning formula.. . . more

Bonobos continues offline expansion

E-commerce driven Bonobos continues to expand its physical presence.
 
The upscale menswear retailer added three new stores (which it calls “guideshops”), with locations at Westfield Century City in Los Angeles; the Summit in Lexington, Ky.; and Chicago’s Southport neighborhood, reported wwd.com. Another outpost is due to in Denver next week.

Coffee giant meets profit expectations but sales miss

Starbucks Corp. met profit expectations for its second quarter even as its sales disappointed.  
 
The retailer’s net earnings increased 13.5%, to $652.8 million, or 45 cents a share, in line with expectations. Revenue totaled $5.28 billion, less than expected.
 
Same-store sales rose 3%, also below forecasts, as average tickets rose 4%. Customer transactions were down 2%, which the company attributed to a change in its rewards program.. . . more

84 Lumber set to open first store in Greater Boston

The company will hold a grand opening for the store at 54 High St. in Holbrook on May 11. The chain based in the Pittsburgh area already has a store in West Springfield.. . . more

Whole Foods shares move higher as another investor tells the grocer to consider a sale

Neuberger Berman, which holds a 2.7 percent stake in the grocery chain, sent a letter to the company's board this week that urged its members to "immediately engage shareholders" to consider options that could include a sale, according to The Wall Street Journal.. . . more
