Eleven retail chains have left New York City this year
New York's high rents and increasingly tightfisted tourists figure to have played a role in some of the retail departures, but there are exceptions. Cache and Joyce Leslie went out of business entirely and closed all of their stores. The United Colors of Benetton eliminated all of its stores in the United States, including itsfour in Brooklyn and two in Queens. In departing those six locations, it left the biggest imprint among the retailers who ditched the city.
But the loss of the Benetton locations wasn't the greatest among New York retailers. Several kept stores in the city but downsized their presence by bigger margins.. . . more
