German discounter Lidl adds double threat to Walmart’s model

This Lidl store recently opened in Arcole, Italy, is roughly the size of the format planned in the U.S. (36,170 square feet). New stores are being planned in eight states from New Jersey to Georgia along the Atlantic coast. Four stores are already planned in North Carolina and two in Pennsylvania as the retailer continues to seek out site selections.It won’t happen this year or the next, or the next, but within 5 years the U.S. grocery sector will see more of deep discounters Lidl and Aldi who have disrupted the retail and grocery store models in the United Kingdom and are now ramping up U.S. expansion plans, according to several retail experts.
